Fantasy Hockey Poolies

Fantasy Hockey Poolies from spartacus on Vimeo.

This humourous video is from 4 or 5 years ago but I think hockey poolies can all still relate to it today. Do you recognize yourself or any of your friends or co-workers in any of the characters?

2010-11 Fantasy Hockey Season

It's time to sharpen your managerial skills as we prepare for the upcoming fantasy hockey season.

There are a few changes from last year that are worth mentioning. There will be three different leagues this year.

  1. UHB http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/uhb
  2. BLADES http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/hockeyblades
  3. BLADES 2 http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/blades2
There are 16 teams in each league. 1 and 2 are head-to-head leagues while 3 is a rotisserie league. 1 is the only league that is returning from last year while 2 and 3 are brand new leagues. If you were in the UHB last year, check your e-mail for your invitation. For the other 2 leagues, the passwords are blades and blades2 for whoever wants to enter either. First come, first served.

All leagues are free to enter with only the UHB winner receiving a prize from the UHB store. Weekly records for the UHB will no longer be recorded.

For your own BLADES apparel, visit HockeyBLADES.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section.

Custom Blades Logo T-Shirts

The next time you are stuck for a fantasy hockey team name, why not go with a timeless classic? The Blades is always a fan favourite. Not original enough you say? Well, the fun part is adding a location, name or adjective in before or after the Blades name. For example, your team can be called the Beer Blades or Blades of Gory, as in blood and gore. With a good imagination, the possibilities are endless.

Once you have chosen your Blades name, the next step is to create your own Blades logo t-shirt. You can do that by using the t-shirt creator above. Click on the menu tabs on the top right to make your choices. Products allows you to switch shirt styles, Images lets you choose the official Blades logo in various colours and styles and Text allows you to add your own personal text to complete your team's name.

You can even add other images to compliment your Blades logo. For instance, if you decided to go with Beer Blades, first choose the Blades logo you prefer, then do an image search for beer and choose an appropriate image that would go well with the overall look. Add text if needed.

What will be your custom BLADES team name?

Congratulations Chicago Blackhawks!

Another NHL hockey season is done and the Chicago Blackhawks finally ended its long Stanley Cup drought. CBC recaps all the thrilling moments for us in this great montage video.

The Hawks have a good young team. Do you think they can repeat as champions next year?

Congratulations 2010 UHB Champions!

Congratulations to the very first UHB champions from the three leagues. The winners are Robin's Runners in the head-to-head Yahoo league, Wild About the Wild in the rotisserie league and raf69it in the Fantrax league. If you click on the tab that reads Champions in the navigation bar above, you will see your teams entered into the records for posterity. Now whenever you want to brag to your friends and need proof, all you have to do is send them a link to that post.

Only one of the leagues awarded a trophy this year (Yahoo H2H), so congratulations to Robin's Runners, managed by Melissa, who will be receiving the Commissioner's Cup for her impressive season.

Be sure to clear a nice spot on your mantle to display it proudly. If you want, you can even send a photo of it once you receive it and  I would be glad to post it on this site. You can pose with it or just take a picture of the mug itself. Whatever you decide to do, you must do one thing. You must sip from the cup! Choose your favourite beverage, fill your stein with it and raise it to your lips and sip like a true champion. Enjoy!

Thank you to all the managers who took part in the inaugural season of the UHB and making it a success. I look forward to doing it again next year and hope to see you return. Make sure to bookmark this site to get any off season updates on league and rule changes.

Support Left Wing Lock

Browsers of this site in search of fantasy hockey info will notice that I have LeftWingLock.com as one of my  resource links. LWL provides timely and accurate information on starting goalies each day of the NHL regular season. The service is free but you have the option of making a monetary donation should you want to help with the bandwidth and hosting costs.

Recently, controversy arose when LWL discovered that another website has allegedly been harvesting LWL's links and posting them without attributing proper credit. Read the full story here.

Do you think the other website is in violation of anything? What would you do if you were LWL?

Looking towards next UHB fantasy season

With the UHB playoffs semifinals underway, it's time to eye next season and what possible changes are in store.

I've already announced on the league message board that starting next season, the UHB will become a dynasty (keeper) league. This should, I hope, weed out any absentee managers who hang around for about 3 or 4 weeks at the start of the season and then disappear once they realize that their roster was poorly drafted.

Teams will be able to keep 5 players at the end of the season so you'll want to make adjustments to your drafting strategy that you had going into this season. another advantage to this is that the live drafts, in years following, will go much faster since you'll have 5 less players to draft for your roster.

Another change I am considering but have not decided yet is if I should award a different prize next year. For example, I am thinking of awarding the champion a hockey jersey like the one you see above, only with the UHB logo on it. It's quite a bit more money than the mug but it would be a cool prize. I am also considering an embroidered hat.

So if you have any opinions about what prize you prefer, just let me know in the comments section here. Thanks and enjoy the rest of the playoffs.

Fantasy Sports Girl: Lorraine's Pickups and Dumps

Despite the fact that Lorraine seems to be reading a teleprompter or cue cards and probably has never even heard of the names she is speaking, she does have a few good points to make. Even if she is just an attractive mouth piece to convey the information, I don't care if  she really is a hockey fan or not
